School of Art Academic Advisors are here to guide you through your academic career. With your interests and goals in mind, academic advisors help formulate academic plans, and create an atmosphere where students can discover their potential, set and reach goals, and prepare for success after graduation.

Walk-in Advising
Walk-in Advising is intended for brief questions, and students will be seen on a first-come first-serve basis. Walk-ins may not always be available during the provided times. Announcements of walk-in cancellations will be sent via George Mason email; you can also contact the School of Art Office or call 703-993-8898 to check walk-in availability.
Virtual Advising
Because you will need to access your degree audit system and may need to share screens during your appointment, we highly recommend using a computer or tablet. We also recommend using headphones if you are not able to attend the meeting from a private place. Due to safety and privacy, meetings will be ended if you attempt to connect:
- While you are in class, actively working, or in another meeting
- While you are driving or traveling
- If you are in a public space or otherwise preoccupied.
Advising Policies
Cancellations and Late Policy
We understand that life happens, so if you need to cancel/reschedule your appointment, you can do so through Navigate, emailing the School of Art office or your advisor, or calling 703-993-8898. We ask that you please cancel at least two hours in advance. Appointments will be canceled after 10 minutes past the appointment time, and you will be marked as ‘No-show’. Repeat offenders will not be able to schedule appointments until the end of the peak-advising season
Preparing For Advising
- Be prepared to discuss and explore course options, address academic problems or concerns, and make decisions about the upcoming semester.
- Make a list of potential courses for the next semester you are interested in taking.
- Explore your Degree Evaluation in PatriotWeb.
- Be prepared to take notes, have a pen and paper or digital tool handy.
Communication
E-mail communication via a student’s college-issued email account is the mandatory method of communication at George Mason University. Due to privacy regulations, the advisor will communicate solely through your college-issued account. While some inquiries may be resolved through email, most situations benefit from scheduling a face-to-face appointment for further discussion. Please include your first and last name, as well as your G number, in all emails with advisors.
Due to FERPA Regulations, we can only discuss educational information with students. If you would like to have another person in your advising session or authorize someone to communicate on your behalf, please complete the FERPA Authorization before communicating with an advisor.
Change of Major
For George Mason students who wish to change to the BA or BFA program:
- You must have a current term GPA of 2.85 or better
- A meeting with a School of Art Academic Advisor is required.
- A portfolio submission is not required.
