Daniel T. Barney

Dr. Barney became a licensed K-12 art teacher after earning his BFA in Printmaking & Drawing, as well as obtaining his credentials in Art and Spanish Teaching. His undergraduate degrees and MA degree (in Art Education) were issued by BYU in Utah, where he served as President of the Utah Art Education Association. As a secondary teacher, he taught jewelry making, painting, drawing, photography, commercial art, and AP Art for over a decade. Commercially, Barney was a bookbinder, silversmith, glass bead maker, and artist of wearable art. Over 75 galleries in North America carried his jewelry, glass, and fiber work while he was a high school teacher. His artwork was shown widely, and he held fellowships in painting, fibers, and printmaking in the summer months.

The notion that art could be a practice of living inquiry led Dr. Barney to seek and obtain a PhD in Curriculum Studies with an emphasis on Art Education from the University of British Columbia, where he taught communications, classroom methods, principles of teaching, and supervised student teachers. Barney has won many regional and national awards for his teaching and scholarship over his career. He presents and publishes both nationally and internationally widely on topics such as artistic methods of inquiry, pedagogical possibilities, issues in contemporary art, curriculum theory, mentoring relations, and literacy in the arts. He has published articles and essays in International Journal of Art and Design Education, Journal for Artistic Research, Journal of Curriculum & Pedagogy, International Journal of Education Through Art, Visual Arts Research, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Cultural Studies—Critical Methodologies, Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, FATE in Review, and Mentoring & Tutoring: Partnership in Learning. Dr. Barney has authored and edited books and book chapters with publishers that include the following: National Art Education Association, Oxford University Press, Palgrave, Peter Lang, Routledge, University of Granada Press, and Valiz.

Dr. Barney served on the Research Commission of the National Art Education Association (NAEA), is a Distinguished Fellow of the NAEA, and is a lifetime member of Professors of Curriculum and Council for Policy Studies. Barney was Editor of the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, International Series Editor of Springer Briefs in Arts-Based Educational Research and Studies in Arts-Based Educational Research, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Curriculum & Pedagogy.

Dr. Barney believes learning in the arts involves more than simply playing within boundaries, it also requires some playing with boundaries.
