Eckert Art Gallery at Millersville University is honored to present Sanctuary, My Place in the World, a solo exhibition of exquisite and revelatory, richly layered, and deeply personal large-scale drawings by Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz. The exhibition will be on view at in Eckert Art Gallery, located in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave, Millersville, PA 17551, from August 29 to October 26, 2023. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon – 5 p.m. and Thursdays from noon – 8 p.m.
Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz will present the Conrad Nelson Endowed Visiting Artist Fellow Lecture on her artwork on Tuesday, October 24th at 7 p.m., Beimesderfer Hall, Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center. There will be a reception for the artist immediately following the lecture. This visiting artist fellowship is endowed by Millersville alumna Conrad Nelson and Luceille B.Hagarman. Lecture is free and open to the public. Ticket reservations open August 21, 2023.
Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz (b. 1973, The Bronx, New York) is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work pulls from 17th and 18th-century European portraiture, comic books, sketch comedy, folkloric dance, and installation to address race, bias, trauma, and healing. For over 20 years she has been committed to creating art that dissects cultural and social constructs designed to isolate, “herd” and manage Otherness, Latinindad, and Blackness.
Wanda Raimunid Ortiz’ performances “offer respect to the spirits of the dispossessed and the deceased, both ancient and immediate, by confronting the painful truths of our reality. Raimundi-Ortiz’ work has been exhibited in numerous venues such as The Momentary, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Museum of Arts and Design, Garage Museum Moscow, Orlando Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico; and at the Manifesta biennial, and the Performa biennial. Numerous media outlets, including Art in America ArtNews, PBS, NPR, The New York Times, and The Washington Post have covered her work. She earned her MFA from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of Art and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Raimundi-Ortiz is Associate Professor of Art at George Mason University School of Art and she currently serves as a board member for the College Art Association where she’s committed to addressing invisible workloads on faculty of color.
