Paper Cuts has found a new home at the Center for Book Arts in New York City. The Paper Cuts collection – both the collection of nearly 600 zines and the collection of almost 80 recorded interviews – will be permanently archived at the Center for Book Arts. To celebrate this new relationship, Paper Cuts is working with the CBA to produce a series of panel discussions this summer to highlight various artists and practices that are documented.

Opening Up the Paper Cuts Collection is a series of three discussions between creators whose publications are featured in the Paper Cuts Zine Collection, now housed at the Center for Book Arts. Each event explores a different area of the Collection’s focus and builds connections between creators within the expansive contemporary small press community.

In advance of each event, publication documentation and previous podcast recordings featuring our panel participants will be made available on the CBA website. The event pages will offer a deeper context of the artists’ practices as well as provide greater insight into the new collection.

Paper Cuts was founded as a podcast in 2015 by Christopher Kardambikis and in 2019 Jennifer Lillis joined as co-producer.

About the Panel

This conversation will center the roles of 3 practitioners who have used the DIY publishing model as a framework for democratizing the distribution of education resources. Moderated by Christopher Kardambikis, each of the panelists will discuss their respective practices relating to zine-making as a tool to carry, persevere, and embed information.

Note: Center for Book Arts will hold this event entirely online. A Zoom link will be sent in an email to all registrants.

Podcast Recordings, hosted by Christopher Kardambikis:

About the Curator

Christopher Kardambikis explores space, process, and narrative through books, prints, and drawings. A bibliophile and zinester, Christopher founded Paper Cuts, a podcast and publishing platform that documents the contemporary world of zines and artist publications, as an excuse to talk to people about the books they make. He received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and MFA from the University of California, San Diego. In the fall of 2016, Christopher joined the faculty at George Mason University as an Assistant Professor and the Director of Navigation Press.
